Resplendent Quetzal at Monteverde

Costa Rica is a very popular destination for bird watchers, more than 900 species of birds can be found  in this country, but without a doubt one of the most desired to observe is the Quetzal.

Belongs to the family of the trogons, among the most colorful birds of tropical America and probably the most beautiful trogon you will ever see, this magnificent bird has glittering green plumages and bright crimson on belly, in essence this is one of the most attractive birds of Costa Rica.

It is a common resident of the Cordillera de Tilarán, where the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is located, every year thousands of tourists come to this magnificent cloud forest to have the opportunity to spot this bird, this cloud forest is the right place to look for it because there are many aguacatillo(small avocado) trees, a small fruit that the quetzal loves to eat. Naturalist guides know very well where this aguacatillo (small avocado)trees are located and there they will stop, look for it and point their telescopes so tourists can clearly watch this amazing bird.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is very well known for hosting this beautiful bird, among many other species, considered a paradise for birdwatchers, this area is an area you should not miss.  

Volunteer Projects at Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is one of the most famous protected areas in the world and one of the 7 nature wonders in Costa Rica because of its biodiversity and beauty. 

Monteverde Biological Reserve develops different projects to guarantee the protection of the wild life  and regeneration of  the forest. All of us can help to support this conservation project, every penny charged with the entrance fee, tours and lodging are reinvested in environmental protection, researches and educational programs.

Another way to help is participating in volunteer programs which are available year round for groups of students, seniors or independent travelers who wish to live a different experience while collaborating immersed in the cloud forest.

 Monteverde Biological Reserve has a well structured program for all kind of interests, some of the activities to choose from are:

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

Wild Gray Fox

In the deep woods at Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, there is a little, thin and gray hairy fox. It is commonly named wild gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). 

The gray fox is characterized by having a furry black tail, with long triangular ears and they are upright always. The paws, sides and the line from the chest to the ears are reddish to brown, besides its belly, throat and cheeks are white.

These curious inhabitants of Monteverde have nocturnal habits and are loners. Each night they show up to hunt rats, reptiles, insects, wild birds and some fruits. Their litter consists of 4 or 6 hatchlings.
